A suitcase with about two million pounds of cocaine was carried by a drug courier who tried to pass through the extensive security screening at the Edinburgh Airport in Scotland. 33-year-old Venita Randall claimed she took a holiday in Bolivia then made a remarkably unusual route to the United Kingdom through Amsterdam since the said route was cheaper. However, she was sentenced to ive years imprisonment by the Edinburgh High Court when she admitted she was involved in the drug supply confiscated in September 2009.

Laura Thomson, the advocate deputy, said the cocaine in Venita Randall’s luggage weighed 3.4 kilos and had 63 % of average purity. During that time, the typical street cocaine purity in the area was only 4%. The confiscated drugs could sum up to 54 kilograms if cut to 4% purity, and could bring in £2,160,000.

Lord Uist, the case judge, told Randall, “You must have been well aware of the risk you were running when you undertook to bring drugs into this country. The chain of supply of class ‘A’ drugs from South America could not operate without willing couriers such as yourself.”

Randall, who is from Upper Tulsehill, Brixton, London and studying at London Metropolitan University, was impeded by the officials of UK Border Agency when she was getting through the ‘nothing to declare’ channel, right after dismounting her plane. The x-ray showed suspicious blocks in Randall’s luggage and when an officer placed a barb into it, the luggage showed white powder traces.

Stuart Carson, the defendant’s solicitor advocate, said that Randall had borrowed £5000 and needed a means to repay it. Making the spree to Bolivia was her way to knock off a sum from her debt.

That London is quite large goes without saying. When deciding to take a place at one of London’s many universities, students often overlook the shear size of the city they are going to live in. Therefore it is advisable to have a quick look at the transport network surrounding your new Alma Mater and also the transport links to the places that you are likely to live and frequent.

London can be very overwhelming, even Londoner’s, born and bred, do not know all of the cities foibles. Getting out and about is the best way to to tackle this city but public transport can make a massive dent in your funds, a common concern for students living on the bread line. If you do insist on using public transport then don’t forget to buy a student Oyster card. They cost £5 but quickly pay for themselves as you get a 30% discount on travel cards and bus passes.

One top student travel tip is to get on your bike. Not only is this a cheaper way of getting around, you’ll find that you feel healthier, see more of the city and beat the traffic. Cycling is also a great way to do your bit to protect the environment. You’ll will often see footage of Britain’s top politicians cycling across the capital. London’s rather eccentric mayor Boris Johnson is such an advocate of cycling he has set up European style bike hire stations across the city. Beware though if you want to cycle invest in a good, strong lock and and a well-
fitting safety helmet.

For everyone sending a child to a London university, the past weeks have been tense. Amidst news of chaos and terror, parents were wondering how their children were holding up (and studying) in a city struck with riots and violence. But as peace and normality are beginning to regain control, no news of Metropolitan University students being affected by or involved in the chaos have emerged. Since rioters largely stayed away from homes instead attacking stores and official buildings, university life has continued as usual.

To be sure, life has been different for a while. Many international students reported that stores closed early and some areas of town were proclaimed off limits. Some have held close contact with their embassies, but retained a clear grasp of both impact and extent of the situation. One Indonesian student told the online news source tempointeractive that he saw more Police on the streets, “especially on high streets like Oxford Street, but it’s not as bad as Jakarta in 1998.”

Others, especially those with non-white ethnic backgrounds, felt somewhat intimated by the prejudices, as one student reported to the Ugandan Daily Monitor: “Because most of the rioters are blacks, it has put us in a tight corner. Being black and a foreigner, everyone around would look at you suspiciously.”

But this sentiment was certainly not shared by many. Most students, both male and female, did hardly feel the impact of the riots for the personal experience. Except for some unease while watching the news and the understandable excitement among Londoners, those studying at London Met were able to remain focused and concentrate on their everyday tasks.

This prestigious British university has recently given a full scholarship to an undergraduate Pharmacology student from Sri Lanka, Kalindu Perera. 19-year old Perera is the first full London Met scholarship recipient from Sri Lanka. The London Met gets more than 1500 scholarship applications annually. Of these, around 40 are awarded scholarships for postgraduate level work. However, only three full undergraduate scholarships are awarded. Understandably, this scholarship is the most competetitive. It includes the full cost of study and covers tuition and housing costs.
To apply for the London Met undergraduate scholarship, applicants must possess excellent academic records, must have extracurricular activities, and must come from a country on the London Met’s priority country schedule. According to an interview at the British Council, Kalindu Perera graduated Gateway College with straight As. His gap year was spent
interning for a pharmaceutical firm. Regarding his chosen field of study, Perera said that he is following a course in pharmaceuticals because of his passion for organic chemistry. He has indicated an interest in HIV/AIDS research and would like to contribute to the world’s improvement through this field of study. Perera applied for the London Met scholarship via the British Council which advised him on the scholarship interview process.
The recent changes in visa rules in the UK and changes in Tier 4 educational institutions have made applying to UK educational programs easier for foreign students. Also, the new International Graduate Scheme’s allowance of employable graduates to remain in the UK has encouraged more applicants to the UK’s higher institutions of learning.

London Metropolitan University boss, Professor Malcolm Gillies has a vision: allowing less advantaged students a taste of elite educational institutions. To these ends, Professor Gillies has proposed a student exchange program between London Metropolitan University and top universities like Cambridge and Oxford. The program is intended to last one year so students can spend their second or third year at one of Britain’s top universities. As for the benefit to elite institutions’ students spending a year at Metropolitan University, Professor Gillies said “[t]hey’ll learn quite a lot about what contemporary Britain is about.”
Image hurley_gurlie182 via morguefile.com

Professor Gillies’ plan was announced during an interview with the Tribune in regards to the UK government’s recently published higher education White Paper. The White Paper proposed to let universities compete for the best student applicants as a way to drive down the price of tuition. A key part of this scheme is to let private companies compete in the higher education space.

Gillies is hoping his scheme would allow more blacks and minority students to experience an Oxford or Cambridge education for a year. London Metro University’s Holloway and City campuses have the highest black and minority enrollees in the UK. He hopes this would widen minority access to elite institutions specially in light of the fact that Oxford, for example, admitted only 26 black students last year. The Cameron government has made known its concern to Oxford for its low levels of black enrollment. Similarly, the Russell group of elite universities has been criticized for its very low intake of students from state institutions where there is a larger population of black and minority students compared to private undergrad schools.

One hundred kilometres away from Oxford’s dreaming spires lies London Metropolitan University in the heart of England’s capital city. London Metropolitan is a new university, formed in 2002 as an amalgamation of the University of North London and London Guildhall University. The transition was not a smooth one. In 2009 London Metropolitan University became embroiled in controversy when it became apparent that student intake data had been massaged and the university had claimed 56 million pounds in central government funding, to which they were not entitled.

For those students who can afford to live in London, where average living costs are up to double that of other UK cities, university life is very rewarding. Students living in London have all the benefits of living in the European Union’s largest urban zone. Opportunities for social and professional development in the capital are endless but there are also naturally some negatives too. Students can become the target of criminals, who prey on the naïve and those students looking for a good time can expect to pay £6 for a pint of lager.
London Metropolitan University is an incredibly diverse university with a lively and active students union. As a young university the institution does not have the same stuffy image as the UK’s older universities. Students are actively encouraged to get involved in the way the university is run and alumni enjoy success in fields as diverse as politics and broadcasting. The London Metropolitan University offers young people opportunities for personal development in the heart of London.
